The History of Alplaus

Alplaus is a small, historic hamlet in the southeastern part of the Town of Glenville in Schenectady County. The name comes from the Dutch words "Aal Plaats," meaning "Place of the Eels," a reference to the Alplaus Kill and its connection to the Mohawk River. Early settlement dates to the late 17th century, and for much of its early history, Alplaus was a small farming community.

Transportation played an important role in the community's development. A railroad corridor was established in 1832 and continues to operate today. From 1902 to 1941, an electric trolley line connected Schenectady and Saratoga and passed through Alplaus, helping transform the hamlet into a small residential community.

Alplaus also has a strong tradition of community involvement. The Alplaus Volunteer Fire Company was established in 1930, with the original firehouse constructed in 1931. The historic Alplaus Methodist Church was organized in the early 20th century and remains part of the community's heritage.

The hamlet has also had some interesting connections to American culture and history. Writer Kurt Vonnegut lived in Alplaus while working for General Electric in Schenectady during the late 1940s and was a member of the local volunteer fire department.
